Ask: Fane (Assuming he somehow remembers this) : If mermaids such as yourself usually have gills to survive in the water, yet have lungs during special moons, does that mean there is some system your kind uses to prepare for a shift? How do they all get to the surface in time to not drown?

Not sure if this was explained well enough.

These merfolk have a set of both gills and lungs. On shore, the gills close to allow the lungs to do their job. Both are connected yet some sections are separate for more obvious reasons (water). She is able to drown when using her human lungs in a more human-like form.

The respiratory is not included for all merfolk but variations. Some solely use and have gills that are capable of filtering air on their own others only have lungs and manage to have a special coating in the lungs to protect them from the water and still be able to filter. How the lungs look on the inside is a mystery since it is considered rude and unacceptable to dissect their kind for scientific reasons. Nor do they have the kind of materials to properly do such experiments.

The size of the body greatly affects the size of organs and it will affect the gills. Since Lunar merfolk spend most of their time under water, they have much larger gills than they have of lungs. With a smaller more compact body includes the problem of diving at great depths before bursting from all the pressure put on the body.

Luckily, this species doesn't live too far down in the ocean for it to be too terrible for them to drown, often colonies will have lived closer to a coastal shoreline with cliffs along it to build passages to better access land. That way when they must go to land to breathe it isn't such a struggle. Though the kind who travels needs to be more aware of the limits and be conscious of the oceans terrain as to not drown. Though it has happened where some have drowned due to not being able to access oxygen.

yeehhhh this took longer because I wasn't sure how to illustrate the body or the organs like how I was hoping to do it.
